What media would you choose if the shot peening spec was: Acording MIL-S-13165C Shot Hardness: 55-63 HRC Diameter of shot: Ø1 0-1 2mm Almen A intensity; 0,021 Coverage > 100% S330, S390; S460? Why?

What media would you choose if the shot peening spec. was: Acording MIL-S-13165C Shot Hardness: 55-63 HRC Diameter of shot: Ø1.0-1.2mm Almen A intensity; 0,021 Coverage > 100% S330, S390; S460? Why?

Both S390 and S460H would meet the some of the spec. The shot size band for both would exceed the 1.0-1.2mm requirement; 390 too small and 460 too large. Does the drawing actually state 'cast steel' is there any mention of cut wire? If it were me I'd send a request for clarification to the design authority stating the size distribution of both 390 and 460 to show how much was within the requirements.

As I understand the statement, it is calling for nominal size of Ø1.0 mm and Ø1.2, this is, you can use S390 or S460. This is regarding the spec.
The size you choose between both of them will depend on your experience with the machine that you are to use, and the set up that the will require, because of geometry.
As a general rule, I would recommend to use the smallest shot size that allows to get the intensity.
